Materials

We use a wide range of materials together — iron, stone, ceramic and others. In structure, roofs and interiors we choose timber as a main element because:

  1. It supports wellbeing. In houses, offices and buildings, timber takes up and gives off humidity, helping to ease rheumatic and respiratory discomfort.
  2. It helps energy saving. Low thermal conductivity makes it a strong natural insulator: warm in winter, cool in summer.
  3. It is quiet. Timber houses are comfortable and about five times quieter than brick or concrete.
  4. Electromagnetic behaviour. Unlike iron, timber absorbs and does not distort electromagnetic fields, which can help people with nerves, circulation or insomnia. In buildings it helps prevent sick-building syndrome.
  5. Adaptable. It fits climate and style and combines with other materials. Clean, and easy to extend or remodel.
  6. Look. Grain, colour and a wide range of stains and varnishes give a natural, traditional or modern image.
  7. Strength and durability. With current protection, timber can resist fire better than a steel frame, with stiffness and resistance to weather.
  8. Environmental. All timber Madercon uses comes from sustainable sources and is treated with ecological varnishes and lasures.
  9. Time and cost. Timber building can cut programme and price: about 30–50% faster than a traditional build.
  10. Tradition. A Finnish saying: if the doctor cannot find the problem, go live in a timber house. Structural timber in housing is widely used in Europe, the USA and Japan.
